Snow on your roof can be very dangerous. If your roof structure is damaged, or decaying, the weight of packed frozen snow can cause destruction. According to an article from disastersafety.org regarding snow and roof collapse prevention, 3-5 inches of old snow is equal to one inch of water, or 5 lb per square foot of roof space. This means that anything more than 2 feet of old snow could be too much for an undamaged roof to handle.
